MOTHERLAND, I SEE YOU

An initiative of the Hellenic Film Academy for the preservation, digitization, screening, and study of films from the rich heritage of 20th-century Greek cinema.

Τhe MOTHERLAND I SEE YOU initiative was a series of screenings offering a thrilling journey through the space and time of Greek cinema and its varied forms. Presented in new digital prints, most restored for the purposes for the initiative, the films where shown  with English subtitles, and free admission for the public. From Dimitris Gaziadis’ bucolic epic (Astero, 1929) to Nikos Nicolaides’ post-apocalyptic cinema (Morning Patrol, 1987), the tightly curated  program  brought together cinematic genres, generations, creative collectives , social struggles, and the ever-relevant themes of women’s rights, history, and fiction.

The initiative premiered from 11 to 15 September 2021, as part of the Athens Epidaurus Festival, with screenings of ten iconic films. The films were subsequently screened at the Greek Film Archive in January and April 2022.

The initiative was carried out under the auspices of the “Greece 2021” Committee, with the National Centre for Audiovisual Media and Communication (EKOME) as the main sponsor, and sponsors including the Greek Film Centre, the Athens Epidaurus Festival, and the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, with the support of the Greek Film Archive and Finos Film..
