The Cinema Rediscovered screening series, organised by the Hellenic Film Academy, comes to a close with three special screenings of one of the most significant films in Greek cinema, Theo Angelopoulos’ iconic “Landscape in the Mist”. The series is part of the Hellenic Film Academy’s programme leading up to the 39th European Film Awards, which will take place in Athens in January.
The acclaimed director was, moreover, a founding member of the European Film Academy, which has designated the White Tower a “Treasure of European Film Culture”. The iconic Thessaloniki landmark gained international recognition as a cinematic location through “Landscape in the Mist”. Through Angelopoulos’ films, Thessaloniki has established itself internationally as a cinematic destination.
On 19, 21 and 23 October, in Athens, Patras and Thessaloniki respectively, audiences will have the rare opportunity to experience the acclaimed director’s film on the big screen.
A landmark film of European cinema
The film that earned Theo Angelopoulos the Silver Lion, the FIPRESCI Prize of the International Federation of Film Critics, and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the Venice Film Festival, as well as the European Film Award for Best Film, encapsulates his cinematic vision in an existential coming-of-age journey, unfolding at an elegiac pace and through images that remain indelibly etched in the memory.
“Landscape in the Mist” is the only Greek film ever to have received the European Film Award for Best Film. This was in 1989, at the European Film Awards, then known as the Felix Awards, which subsequently evolved into the European Film Academy Awards. The awards were only in their second year, and Ingmar Bergman was President of the Academy at the time.
Two siblings leave their home in search of their father in Germany. Their journey, marked by loss and small miracles, becomes a coming-of-age passage through a world that offers them no explanations, yet changes them forever.
